These mixes are not mine, but given to me by the super cool dj that has a show after mine. Classic funk-soul, some real gems in these two mixes. I would suggest mix 2 first, as it draws you in quicker. But absolutely listen to track 8 from mix 1. Makes me wish I was a rap producer, because it basically sounds like dr. dre before dr. dre existed.

I just had my radio show last night at 4am, and this is the mix from it. Basically, I called it “indie with soul,” which is kinda misleading because it’s not soul music, but rather indie music with something special to make it better than the rest, in my humble opinion. Mostly catchy indie/rock is a more simple description. But people who don’t like “indie” should check it out, because it bridges some gaps to other kinds of music. – Jesse (ps, there were some new song from art brut and the thermals mixed in, and the order was definitely rearranged at some points)

Now, for Arcade Fire, I just got from my friend a bunch of GREAT tracks (mostly live versions or alternates) that he ripped from the 7″ LP. I strongly suggest checking these out – especially the multiple versions of Neighborhood #3 and the cover of “This Must Be The Place” by the Talking Heads. The key song though is “Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son (Serge Gainsbourg cover)”. It makes my heart race (sounds like french indie rock meets Ennio Moriscone), and needs to go in a movie. Czech ‘em.

Oh wait, it’s just DJ Shadow, making one of the most dynamic and relentless mixes I’ve heard. Not sure if many know about Shadow, but absolutely listen the rest of his work. This is more on the Girl Talk side rather than the Aphex Twin side of his shit, but it rocks.

A Mix That Follows My Moods

I’m not professing anything deep here. I suppose I’m expressing myself to you guys through the music choices by default, but that wasn’t my main intent. Maybe I thought it would be interesting to really look at how drastically the music I listen to ebbs and flows given my attitude that day, hour, minute, second, whathave you. No one really reads these anyways. More important to me, than any cathardic experience or bonding-via-tunes, is that hopefully (well, surely) there will be some artists (ideally) or songs (probably) that you haven’t heard. This is the first mix I’ve ever bothered to order, with the goal of creating a flow, and I think I did alright. Please shower me with praise and keep your constructive criticism to your fucking selves. Thanks.

Da Traqzzz

1. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (1994) – Outkast. The reason there’s a year at the end of the title is because it’s on a playlist I downloaded called the “100 Greatest Rap Songs.” Unfortunately, at least a quarter of the songs suck dick and I could name five or six different songs that I would put on there, but hey.

2. Zealots – The Fugees. Lauryn Hill’s verse in this song is so intergalatically dope that it almost makes me want to forgive her for her altter day sins and bitchiness, but not quite. Also, the songs is 4:20 long, so it’s great to blaze to. Whatever, we’re from the Bay, I can say that.

3. Wild Like A Tiger – Eek-a-Mouse. One of the greatest Reggae artists ever, who still plays in Petaluma from time to time. I don’t really know what this song is about, but I think what Eek is saying is that he’s killed a tiger with his friend before. If false: Cool story. If true: Instant grounds for my fellating of Ee. For real.

4. Crap Artists – Despot. I have no idea where this song came from, who Despot is, or which one of my friends listens to him, but this song is dope. It’s got a fat beat, some dope lyricism and, for a bearded red-head who kinda looks like Duffy from Blow, his flow ain’t bad. Nigga.

5. Hot Jalapenos – Mac Dre ft Smoov-E. From “A Tale of Two Andres,” although Nickatina is conspicuously absent. Dope beat, very funny opening by the Crestside Cutthoat himself. I really don’t know what to say about this song. I really, really like it.

6. Pink & Blue – Outkast. One of two artists to have two songs on this playlist, Pink & Blue is one of the weirder, albeit doper Outkast songs I’ve heard in a while. Smooth.

7. Love And Happiness – Al Green. I’m pretty sure this song is listened to before a drive by in a movie I’ve seen. Not really fitting, but Al Green’s basically perfect. I bet he spit the hardest game ever spat.

8. Love Will Keep Us Together – Captain and Tenille. C’mon! This song’s really catchy, even if they aren’t the most talented group. Youtube it and watch how Tenille sings it. Pretty funny. Reminds me of Francis McDormand in Burn After Reading. Chicky-chicky-chicky!

9. Bad Man! – Murs. A touching song about how Murs basically just wants to fuck this girl. Nuff said.

10. What Does It Profit A Man – Black Eagles. Right now, this is one of my favorite Reggae songs. I don’t know much else by Black Eagles, but if their other work is like this, they’ve gotta be up there with the greats. Just one of the many undiscovered (well, not anymore, and I can’t be certain there are anymore, but statistics and any educated guess would back me up) gems hidden in my almost-too-fat reggae compilation.Unfortunately, I can’t understand most of what is being said, and there’s no lyrics.

11. Tell It To Me – Old Crow Medicine Show. A traditional Bluegrass group from somewhere that’s not here. A song about the dangers of cocaine (pronounced Co-kay-ayña). Most likely going to be the most-skipped song on the playlist, but an enduring favorite of mine.

12. Trench Town – Bob Marley. Yes.

13. Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going To Be A Long, Long Time) – Elton John. Gay: yes. Wore crazy outfits on stage: yes. Performed with Eminem: oui. Even though Nick Cage quotes this (however, it is in the only decent Michael Bay movie and one of the last good Cage movies, The Rock) I can’t help but love the Queen….for knighting this motherfucker.

14. Easy Skanking – Bob Marley. The OTHER artist to have two songs on this playlist. No big deal. I like Ziggy better anyways.

15. P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up) – Parliament Funkadelic. This song, technically, is everything I despise in modern music. Song-length choruses. But, it’s P-Funk, so the inbetween, the weird we’re-actually-not-here-but-rather-taking-over-your-radio-station taking is funny and

16. Coka Cola – Andre Nickatina. I honestly can’t think of anything to say, but I like Andre Nickatina.

17. Sound Is Vibration – Atmosphere. I’ve always thought that Atmosphere was a lot more fun to listen to when Spawn was part of the group (ie, Overcast!) and this is definitely my favorite Atmosphere song. Good imagery. Phenomenal effort.

18. Big Man – The Mighty Diamonds. My favorite song right now.

19. In The Flesh – Pink Floyd. This song is comprised, well, wholly of one of my favorite guitar solos. You know those songs where you say “damn, I wish the whole song was like (this one part that you really love) but it isn’t, so I don’t like it that much.” Well, this song is all the part that I really love. The end is weird though, I don’t much like the sound of air raids.

20. Maggot Brain – Parliament Funkadelic. Written by the guitarist, whose name escapes me right now, the song was written when Clinton told guitarist to write a song “about the saddest thing you can imagine; your mom dying.” Alex VH and I shroomed on Loma Alta to this song (not the whole time, mind you) and as such, it brings back very fond memories. Odd…

Music that is not really a mix but a collection of songs

I never really make mixes, but I love all the ones you guys have put up. Here’s my collection of songs from artists that are lesser-known, or just something I think you would be interested in. The following is some help if you want to find more of an artist you like. It’s really hard for me to listen to new music only because I constantly need to find more by the artist, or other artists like it. Hopefully this makes it easier for people. Also, I listen to music for all of its elements, but the beat and catchiness is very important to me, which might expain some of this. Also I’m a bit out of it because I crashed my skateboard really hard today, so bear with me. I did not put the songs in any specific order, and some artists have multiple songs represented, only because I really love them, and if one song sounds bad, listen to the other, it might change your mind–

THE MIX.

The Futureheads – Hounds Of Love (Phones’ Wolves At The Door Mix) Ministry of Sound puts out hella mixes, all on torrenting websites. Many are really worth checking out.

The Cool Kids – Mikey Rocks – the cool kids have just put out an EP called The Bake Sale. If you like them, check out the Kidz in the Hall.

Rombo (Feat. Congorock).mp3 – Again, kinda intense techno. I dunno why I put this on here. Makes you wanna fight someone.

Edan-Beauty and the Beat-13-Promised Land – If you like good rap music, Edan is the way to go. He actually created his whole album by sampling 60′s and 70′s psychedelic rock. If you like him, check out any alternative rap, especially Mr. Lif and Souls of Mischief.

Cold War – Death from Above 1979 – Really catchy but incredibly loud and harsh rock. Give their album a listen, the quality on this song isn’t so good. It’s really easy to go from this band to really bad screamo and other shit like that, but the Hives are comparable, as is some Bloc Party. They only put out one album, but it’s worth getting. Also, Mstrkrft was spanned from this.

In the Valley – The Lovely Feathers – catchy, simple indie rock. It’s more about the beat and less about lyricism, but i like it. The Shins, The White Stripes, The Black Keys, Kaiser Chiefs.

Diplo – Way Wore (remix) m.i.a.-bucky done gun – this, however, is the shit. So fucking funky and good. If you like it, get more diplo, bonde de role, any music labelled baile funk.

@$$Hole (Featuring Edan) – Time Machine – I randomly found this album, Time Machine isn’t really well known, but check them out. Edan comes back on this one, he makes the song. There are too many rappers to mention here: Del, Heiroglyphics, Jurassic 5, Aesop Rock, the list goes on.

Rhymefest – Bullet (feat Citizen cCope) – Rhymefest is the shit, hands down. He’s ugly, but he raps so good.
